Gauge wire for Suspended Ceiling T-Bars?

What gauge wire is generally required by code for holding up suspended ceiling girding? Home Depot had both 18 and 12 gauge. 12 gauge seems overkill, but it was there. Is it used for heavier than normal tiles? I remember my inspector mentioning something about the wire, but not sure if said 12 or 18 gauge. It was several months ago.

Wire

As with any fastener, the key is proper spacing of the grid wires.
