Ceiling repair
Hello,
I just had an accident and did what you can see in the picture.

It is a rental unit so I would like to repair it asap.
What material is that? How do you suggest I repair it? Thank you!

Welcome to the forums!
Ideally you'd fill the depression with joint compound and then spray texture over it when dry. The odds are the ceiling would need to be painted to make the repair completely blend. It might be possible to do a decent job of texturing using thinned down j/c and applying it with sponge, maybe even patting it as it dries with something stiff like an old toothbrush.
Have you discussed this with your landlord?

Norm201's suggestion seems to involve much less work, but would the spray be enough to fill the hole as well?
Thank you

Spray alone won't fill the depression, it needs to be filled with j/c first. You can buy aerosol cans of texture although any sprayed texture is messy [cover everything up well]. Often it's advisable to practice the spraying on some cardboard [or whatever] first so you can dial in the right setting and technique before you spray the ceiling.

Unless the paint job is recent, the odds are the ceiling paint won't touch up well. Often just dabbing on paint to the affected repair is less offensive than trying to feather in the paint to make it blend.

Try taking a screw with a sharp point like a course drywall screw and screw it into the exact middle of the dent. Gently try to pull the dent down to the original position. Pull very softly as the screw will try to rip the paper and just pull out. But worth a try if you have to fix it anyway. Sometimes, you can get lucky and pull it to the point that it is not noticeable.
If you have a hole, you can take something "L" shaped like an allen wrench and get up there to pull from the backside.
