Expanding wall?

I've got a door frame on the side if the house, the trim of which is separating at the bottom to the point that I can see the nails originally holding it in place, about half an inch of separation. The trim itself is flush with the interior wall, leading me to think the wall is expanding at the floor level. Does anyone know what could cause that, and how I could fix it? Thanks for any advice!

Here it is. It seems like the plaster is pulling away from the wall...

It looks as if someone overlaid sheetrock over existing, not taking into account the jamb size and just put the trim on top of it all. I don't think the sheetrock is expanding. Second thought is the door has been pushed outwardly and separated from the trim and framing, although the linoleum strip has no space between it and the threshold, indicating otherwise.
