drywall to ceiling joint tape question

Ok, so we had to some wall repairs(drywall) due to termites, 2 walls, anyways whoever done the sheetrock before we lived here didn't do it right I guess. I have nail pops here and there mainly in the ceiling, so I am scraping all the texture off the ceiling and want a white flat ceiling no texture. There joint tape is also falling, so my question is do I remove the tape from the ceiling and the wall joint and replace it all around the room? the tape on the wall part of the joint is not coming off just the ceiling part. I have been scoring as I go and just taking off the ceiling part of the joint tape(which is coming off very easy), but didn't know if I am supposed to take it off the wall too and redo the whole joint. any help would be great, thanks

to get the tape off the wall you would have to soak and scrap it. If the old tape is not to built up I would just retape it like a new wall and feather the wall JC down at least a foot.

I am changing paint color on the walls anyways, so I just keep cutting the tape out of the ceiling and then rejoint tape over the wall and the ceiling fading down the wall a foot, then prime and paint.

Generally there is no need to remove any tape that is adhered to the drywall - just add mud as needed. If you have loose tape it's best to cut it back where it's adhered well and then pull off the loose.
