Stains on ceiling?
I painted my living room about 1.5 years ago. Ceiling was painted white with ceiling paint. Within the last 8 months a stain appeared on the ceiling and then seemed to spread overnight to a large area about 4 feet long x 1 foot wide. This is a 2 family home and two family home with another living room above mine. I'm not sure what these stains are and need help identifying what they could be. Could they be water/rain marks? I never saw any water dripping from the ceiling and the stains start about a foot into the ceiling from the wall.
Is it possible there was some reaction from the paint with very old drywall? The drywall was installed in the 1960s. These stains were not there before painting.
Thank you for any help.

Is the paint sound in that area? What did the ceiling look like before it was repainted?
Generally a water stain is more fluid looking. I'd sand/scrape that area, apply an oil base primer [to seal any stain and promote adhesion] and then touch up the paint. A 1.5 yr old paint job may or may not touch up where it isn't noticeable.

Ceiling stain
The ceiling (a very old beige color) was perfectly normal before the new paint was applied. It had been many years since it had been painted. I'll try sanding and repainting. Wanted to be sure it's not a wAter stain which would be highly unlikely due to the fact this is the first floor and there's another apartment above me.

The fact that there is an apartment above does not rule out a water stain as plumbing leaks and spills can also happen BUT that does not look like a water stain. It looks more like a contamination on the old paint that caused the new paint to crawl. I'd let how it looks/feels after sanding determine whether or not a primer should be used.
