Weird ceiling. Any idea what this is?

Older house. Moved in about two months ago. Just noticed this on the ceiling. It's a weird pattern

Do you know anything about the ceiling? Is it different than the other rooms in the house? What's above this room?

About what are th dimensions of the areas between the lines? It looks like the lines are depressions and the areas between the lines are like pillows. Is this right?

This is happening to two ceilings. One has a bedroom above it (the picture), one has the attic above it which is not as bad. Yes, it looks like pillows.

How old is the house? when did this first appear? is there any give in the ceiling? have you put a straightedge along the ceiling in various places to determine how much it has sagged? [assuming it wasn't a poor skim coat job]
