Finishing my basement with plumbing obstacles
I would like to finish my basement, however I have a Drain pipe that runs along the wall at about waist level and leaves the basement to go to the public sewer. What is the best way to box it out so I can drywall that wall while having access to it with out needing to rip down drywall if a leak should occur?

Not seeing what you see, puts us a little behind. Could you post a picture or two of this so we can see it, too. What is the diameter of the pipe in question?

Without pictures, you can build your wall out from the pipe to allow a flat wall surface. I have built them in two pieces, top and bottom and tied them together at the face, but that's a real pain. You should never have to get to that pipe, only its cleanout, so building over it with an accessible clean out would be my choice. We'll wait on pictures.

You have a lot of busy-ness going on besides the horizontal pipe. Framing the wall with 2x6 limber and making access panels for your washer supply lines and wye configurations, would be the best bet. Hopefully the cast iron pipe won't need much maintenance as long as you have a cleanout. Of course you could replace the cast iron with PVC and be done with it, but that's another job.

1. So the only part of the drain line I need access to is the clean-outs? Those washer dryer lines are old and no longer in use.
2. How about where the pipe exits the basement to the city connection?
3. What would the advantage of going to PVC lines be other than the fact they would be lighter?
The current lines are 55yrs old plus, so I am sure there is lots of scale in the lines. I currently have no drainage problems.
4. Does PVC offer less scale build up?
5. Is the best way to go from PVC to cast iron pipe a Fernco fitting?
Thanks
