Soffit with already low ceiling

I'm putting a bathroom in my basement. The ceiling is only about 6'8" and the bathroom will be small.

Generally speaking, I like the way soffits look. Normally I would put one over the sink and toilet (which are on the same wall). That would bring the soffit down to about the 6 foot level.

What do you think about a soffit when a ceiling is already low?

Nope, not in this case.

You actually don't meet current codes with this ceiling in the first place so I wouldn't do anything to lower it that you didn't have to do.

I wouldn't install a soffit in a room with a ceiling that low! The most I would do would be to laminate the border of the ceiling with 1/2" drywall to give it some interest .... not sure that would work in a small room.

Guess your doing this without a permit, as mentioned that ceiling height may not even meet code in your area.
How's that going to work out when you go to resell?

That is standard ceiling height in my area (Long Island, NY) and it is difficult to find an unfinished basement.

Might be a standard height in your area but I still say no to the soffit since it is so low.

The more I think about it, the more I agree. It would probably look pretty silly.
