What type and size of drywall screw to use

What length drywall screws are best for attaching 1 1/2 in drywall to 2x4 wood studs and what thread type, coarse, fine, etc. I already have some 2 1/2in coarse thread but I have the feeling that may be overkill. I also have some 1 1/4in fine thread. I'm guessing 1 1/2 or 1 3/4in coarse is about right.

Fine thread are generally for steel studs, while course are best for wood. 1 1/4" length for 1/2" drywall on walls and 1 5/8" for 5/8" drywall on ceilings.

These guys gave you some good answers. What you have to consider when installing drywall is that it's predominantly installed over 2x4 studs and wiring is run thru the center of the 2x4. That means you don't want more than 1" of screw in the stud so as not to risk hitting a wire.

Why do you want to install 1 1/2" of drywall. That's three layers.

Then a 1 1/4" or 1 5/8" coarse thread screw will be fine. I normally use the 1 5/8" because they are easier to find locally.

Did he mean one & one half inches of drywall (3 pieces)or 1 half inch piece of drywall which would be the usual size? if he meant 3 pieces on top of each other, then I change my answer to 2" course thread.

Greg said in post #6 it was a typo and he meant 1/2" not 1.5"
