Soft drywall in bath-help

I am doing a bathroom remodel and i have a few soft spots. There was a water leak at the tub at the floor but was fixed long ago. Whats wierd is that the soft spots were newr the middle of the drywall and not at all at the floor level. I have cut out the softspots, and no visableold at all...looks very clean. I found this when i painted and the paint dryed and started cracking. What do i do now?

You can cut a square hole to clean each one up or one larger square.

I'd cut two square holes like I've indicated with the red lines. I'd add a piece of wood behind the larger hole to give you a place to fasten to. Makes a neater and more solid repair. Now just cut two pieces of sheetrock in the sizes needed to fill the holes.

So the larger area even out of the picture, approx 3ft x 3 ft-the new paint is cracking. Is this an issue? Should i cut out all the areas that are cracking or just the sodt spots?

Can you better explain the cracking paint? Is it bonded well with the underlying paint? How soon did the cracks appear after applying the new paint? What prep was done prior to painting? Did that section of wall look like the rest prior to painting?

Don't know what caused the damaged to those spots but it doesn't look like water damage.

I put teo coats of primer on then two coats of sherwin williams paint on. After i painted, the cracks in the paint started around the soft spots. I should say i knew there was a soft spot or two before painting but went ahead, then the soft spots got softer.

The crackling of the paint is kind of like glass when broken but doesnt shatter and is only doing this within a ft or two of the soft spots i have ripped out.

There is no sign of mold at all. Everything is clean.

Thoughts?

The cracks appeared soon after the second coat of paint dried.

How long did you wait between coats? Latex paint can crack if too many coats are applied too soon - the underlying paint isn't able to cure like it should.

I think i did not wait long enough. However it is only a small section of the bath and i painted the two coats at the same time

Depending on how well the wall is sealed, air movement and the fact that section of drywall might have had some moisture in it - all plays a part in how long it takes for the paint to dry/cure.

To fix it, I'd sand [to make sure it's all stuck well] skim with j/c, sand, texture if needed and prime/paint.

The wait time between coats listed on the label is there for a reason. While you can often cheat a little, the more coats that are applied the more important those wait times become. Whenever more than 3 coats are applied, extra time is needed!
