Does drywall always have to be taped & mudded?

I'm going to redo my kitchen this summer. Based on a bathroom reno, I suspect that I'll have to rip out the wall behind the current tile backsplash in order to take out the tile. I'd then put in new drywall. This drywall will be tiled and won't be visible. Must I first tape and fill the seams? Thanks

Tape the seams and put on one coat of Durabond and you will be good to go.
