Purple vs Green sheetrock

About 5 years ago I remodeled my upstairs bathroom using purple XP drywall. I was informed that the purple had mold resistant properties that the green did not.

I cannot find purple at the local box stores and now have been told that green board now has anti mold properties in addition to the water resistant properties.

What is the real answer? Does purple only prevent against mold and not water? Does green protect against both water and mold?

This is for a basement bathroom so I would like to get the best stuff.

Available Drywall Types and Their Applications

AFAIK, water will damage any dry wall. That site explains the different types.

IMO the green drywall isn't needed, the same properties that help it be moisture resistant also make it harder for latex primers to get a good bond. I've not had any dealing with the purple drywall. Normally once the drywall has a coat or two of latex enamel it has all the moisture protection it will need.

You didn't mention it and it wasn't brought up, but sheetrock, no matter what the color or claims should not be used in a wet area such as a shower or over a tub.

I'm not sure when that article was posted but it doesn't mention the updated mold guard info I was reading about the green USG stuff.

Chandler - this is just a 1/2 bath toilet and sink. Though I did use sheetrock in the upstairs bath with Kerdi waterproof membrane which is a common practice. The old home owner used regular sheet rock without a membrane under the tile and I had to replace rotted studs and subfloor.

Edit - my interest in mold resistance is that one of the walls faces a musty crawl space. Not water, but humidity.

You might consider using the yellow/paperless drywall.

spta97, is there a high CFM exhaust fan, in that bathroom. When I converted a half bath to a handicapped accessible bathroom, for my father, I installed 2 high CFM exhaust fans with lights. They were so quiet, you couldn't hear them. They were also quite effective.

As far as the yellow that would require me to mud the surface - it's not that bad where it is worth the extra expense / time.

Regarding the fan, I haven't thought of putting one. Is it worth it to put an exhaust fan for just a toilet and sink? The way the rafters run it would be quite a challenge to pipe it.

If installing a fan is too much trouble, don't bother. What about a window fan?

The window I'm replacing is one of the slider types you would find in a basement so not much of an option there.

If a fan is a good idea I can install one.

Not worried about the sound - actually the louder the better for me. Nothing happening in a bathroom that I wouldn't mind masked by fan noise
