Replacing kitchen tile splashback

I'm completely re-doing my kitchen: new cabinets etc. Yesterday the second splashback tile I removed took the wall with it, leaving a hole. I saw that the tile was simply cemented to what seems to be 1/2-inch drywall. I'm wondering: instead of trying to save the wall, would it not be faster, easier and -- significantly -- cleaner -- to simply cut out that part of the wall and put in new drywall? I figure the mudding/taping wouldn't have to be perfect since the wall will be covered with new tile and the new cabinets. The affected area is 17" wide by a total of about 30' long.

Is there any reason to save the old wall? Thanks

Whichever way makes for less or quicker work is the way to go. You could make an argument for either way.

I agree. Do whatever is easier. I would guess that a half and half approach might be fastest. Remove the tile and replace the sheetrock where it is too damaged. If removing the sheetrock there will be a little work making the straight cuts at the counter and bottom side of the cabinets. Then there is pulling the nails and screws.

OK, I'll be cutting out the wall. Thank you both for the quick replies!
