Cement Board Wall Panels

I want to use Wonderboard/cement board as wall paneling and would like to stain or paint them to alter their color slightly. How can I achieve a look like this image?Name: 04afad10a8c2a5874f9f2aebfdcd47ae.jpg

Welcome to the forums!

It looks like a clear sealer was applied to the cement board. It's possible the color variation is just from the differences in each board ..... or they could have slightly tinted the sealer for individual boards to get the different shades.

They make dyes for staining/ coloring concrete. I would assume all the panels in your pic were all layed on the ground and individually stained with the dry powder mix and some water... each being treated with a unique color and technique before letting them dry and sealing them.

While I've never worked with concrete dyes, I would assume that as porous as cement boards are that the dye would need to be thinned down or mixed sparingly to keep from over tinting the boards.

Sealing is important as cement backer board does have a distinct odor to them. While I am familiar with it, it is hard to explain. Stick your nose in the pile at the store to satisfy your curiosity. When doing a bathroom remodel, the smell goes away after it is covered with tile. These also are the back sides of the panel as the front has writing on it.

good info! I plan on making a run to the local hardware store tomorrow, checking out the cement panels. What kind of sealer would you recommend? Im all about a satin/matte finish

I'd probably go with a water based poly as it should fill the pores in the cement board a little better than a solvent based sealer.

I really don't know what sort of look you are going for, but I don't think you should use a standard poly of any type, unless that is the look you want.

I would definitely recommend you look into something that is specifically for sealing concrete, like some of the products made by BASF... Masterkure, Masterprotect, Enviroseal. Many of these products really do not leave a sheen, their purpose is to seal and "dust proof" the surface.
