I just purchased my first home and have been redoing just about everything. I decided to tear out the kitchen cabinets and get going to remodeling this. The kitchen is 1950's style and to be honest, stinks (literally)! The walls have this plastic type tile cemented on over old style plaster. I do not want to tear out that plaster by any means. 1) Can I just cover up the walls in the kitchen with 1/4" drywall and hang new cabinets on that? Of course I would find the studs not only for drywall installation but for the cabinets as well. I just want to do the side walls and leave the ceiling as is being it's in good shape. Besides, I don't want to deal with the damn spray in insulation if I tear the ceiling out. I'm looking for some tips here in doing this and I am a DIY'er and not a pro by any means. The one that was in the kitchen only left me a 25" wide doorway to get appliances in the kitchen. Needless to say my new 35" fridge did not fit. I ended up sawz'alling part of the counter right on out to fit the fridge in! Could I maybe have the counter top be the same size as it was but maybe put in some sort of hinges on the underside of the counter so I could lift that section up if I need the space to remove or bring in an appliance? I'm wide open here to any and all ides. Thanks, fellas!

I've seen videos where everyone seems to install drywall horizontally. My ceiling is only 6'10", so installing vertically would eliminate a horizontal seam. Is there any reason I should not install the drywall vertically? Thanks!
