Drywall outer layer torn
As I was removing a dead wall-mounted microwave oven from my mom's kitchen wall, I discovered - too late- that the previous owner had glued a piece of quarter-round trim to the wall and the microwave to make the installation look better. When I removed the trim, I also ripped a portion of the outer layer of the drywall off.
Can I patch the area with drywall mud, sand, and repaint? Or is there a better way?

Close - prime the exposed gypsum first with either an oil based primer or Zinsser Gardz to keep the gypsum from absorbing the moisture in the joint compound.

How large of an area lost the paper face? The drywall will never be as stout as it was when the paper was there. I agree with using one of the above primers. If the edges of the remaining paper are loose they should be cut clean. You'll probably need to skim the transition with joint compound.

No bigger than that is, I'd prime it, skim coat, sand and prime again. It will be fine. Sometimes you run across walls where a large portion of the paper was pulled off and while those can be primed/skimmed - it will never be a strong wall
