would it be safe to drill a couple of holes into the strapping (see picture)

Hello I've attached a picture of the ceiling attic showing the joist/strapping. I want to know if its safe to drill a couple of tiny bit size holes (1/16" roughly) into the strapping but right close to where the strapping and joist meet. Please see the picture of where the black circle. The hole would be into the strapping not into the (1.5" x 5.5") joist.

There is no problem drilling moderate holes through the strapping. A problem will arise if the hole compromises the strength of it, which apparently, from what you describe, won't happen. Be sure to seal the holes with caulk or fireproof sealant to keep air from the living quarters from leaking into the attic.

What's the holes for?
The holes not going to do any harm but what it's for may change the reply.

Most homes in my area don't even have strapping. We have had a discussion here before about it not being used everywhere so apparently it isn't even need. So no need need to worry about holes in something not really needed IMO.

Hello and thank you all for the responses. The hole is just to secure a hanging plant from the ceiling. Hope that helps. We would like to wrap around the strapping if possible.

That is what I was thinking get a hook with wood threads and go directly into joist. Will be much stronger that way.
