Stain on bathroom ceiling

So we moved in to our house about 7 months ago and the other day while in the bathroom is looked up and saw a faint wet spot on the ceiling. I felt it and it was dry, tapped on it to see if it was mushy and nothing. It almost looks like it was painted with white paint.

Welcome to the forums!

Could you supply a pic or two - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...your-post.html

Water stains are typically brown. They require a solvent based sealer [oil or pigmented shellac primer] If just painted with latex they will bleed thru sooner or later.

There usually is a vent pipe located above the bathroom and it is possible that the seal around that vent on the roof is beginning to dry out or has cracked. It allows some water to drip down the pipe when it rains. I you have access to the attic space, you will be able to see light around the pipe if you look at it from the inside.

Thanks. It's odd because you really have to look at it and let your eyes focus on it for a minute to see it. The vent instead a straight shot up from the bathroom it must curve somewhere and go up. I went to the attic and didn't notice anything odd and it looks fairly new within the past few years. The only thing above it is the washer and dryer but I have the washer on and nothing is leaking and the floor up there has never been wet. I'm trying to upload pictures but I'll have to do that from my computer.

So do you have water (waste or supply) lines running through the ceiling?

There may be but I'm not 100% sure. There is the drain pipe that runs in the opposite side of that room, it is boxed out in a corner. I don't heare dripping or feel wetness or bubbling like I have had with a leak from my roof.

I checked it again a few minutes ago and it still looks the same. It's dry and I tried putting my finger through it. We had 3 loads of laundry going and 2 showers and it still looks the same. Is it possible it was there this entire time and I noticed it just by looking at the right angle? I showed my wife and she didn't even see it till pointed right at the arearliest and it took her a few seconds to see it.

It's possible that area was touched up with the wrong paint but it's hard to say without seeing it.

It's very faint but I'm trying to get a picture and upload it. You can only see it if you stare at it for a little bit.
