Strange "rock" found stuck to back of drywall

Someone patched a whole in our wall, using a small piece of drywall. We have since removed the patched piece of drywall, and we have found what appears to be a "rock" stuck to the back of the drywall. Does anyone know what this "rock" may be, or why it may have been attached?

How big is the rock? was it on top of beneath the paper? Is it embedded in the drywall?
Drywall is made of crushed gypsum rock and I have seen a time or two where not all of it was completely crushed. It's also possible the drywall laid on the ground prior to installation and 'trash' on the floor got pressed into it.
