Ceiling Crack Repair
Have water damage to a ceiling and am patching. In the photo, you can see I've cut away the worst of the damage, and will affix a section of drywall to fill that in. My question concerns the slight crack that can be seen extending into the distance, which is along the joint between sheets of drywall.

Originally, I planned to continue cutting away the current drywall a few inches on either side of the crack and patch with a new piece. But now I'm wondering if I could just cut in a V-notch along the crack and fill with setting compound. If I went that route, would I really need to then tape the length of the crack, or could I get away with not doing that? I think I know the answer, but would just like to hear some opinions on this repair before I proceed any further. Thanks.

It looks like that crack is on an angle and not a joint between 2 sheets of drywall. If it is indeed a joint it's best to remove the tape and redo. If it's not at a joint and drywall is solid - your proposed fix should work.

It does look angled, doesn't it? Must be the angle of the photo. It really is along a drywall seam, so I will work at removing the tape and then retaping. Thanks for your reply.
