Black Smoke like swirl on wall
In one of the bedrooms right above the door I can see a black smoke like swirl. Anyone know what that could be? It is a house we just bought and have lived in since July 2016. I know people smoked in the house previously, but I also found we have a mold issue in the basement. Is it more likely to be smoke stain that they did not paint over properly? It doesn't look like a mold it looks like a soot. If I can post a pic I will soon. Thank you.

Generally smoking in the home does not leave black soot like marks. Smoking generally leaves a brown/yellowish film of nicotine.
Have you tried wiping the area with a damp rag? Does the stain come off onto the rag at all?
