Pulling painted sheetrock off metal studs

Im pulling painted sheetrock off metal studs - is there a way to find the screws so I can pull pieces of sheetock off whole and not mangle the stud?

The magnet may not work since the studs are steel, too. If you move slowly down the stud, the finder will react a little differently and more positively when it crosses a screw head.

Cut the rock on the open side of the stud then you can see where the screws are. Scrape through the finish until you see th screw head and back it out. With good luck the next stud over might let the rock fold and you can do the same.

what tool do you use to scrape thru the paint finish to access the screw?

A pull scraper like you use when prepping an old exterior for paint will work. Expect the screw head to be full of joint compound.
