I just finished removing wallpaper from a room where they also put it on the pocket door so the scene could be completed when the door was closed. I just realized, now that it's been removed, that they put drywall (at least that what it looks like to me) over the door so it would be a smooth surface. Now I have a pocket door that is completely flat and texture-less that doesn't match the texture and cutouts of the other pocket door to my jack and jill bathroom. Is it possible to remove it without destroying the door? The doors throughout the house match and I know I won't be able to find the same one 15 years after it was build. Any help is appreciated.

 

No real way to know without trying as it will depend on what sort of adhesive or fasteners were used. I would say the chances of getting it off and restoring to original condition so it matches the other door(s) are slim.

Is there another door in the house the same size in a less important or visible location you could swap it with?

If it comes to it, I would think by going to a real lumberyard you would be able to get a fairly close match to the door, unless it was something really unusual. The problem will be matching the finish, which is usually doable although often challenging.

Best bet is probably to delicately try to remove whatever was put over the door and hope for the best.

I don't think there would be any room for the door in the pocket with drywall on it.
It may be some type of wallpaper too.

 

How thick is this door? I too find it odd that there would be drywall attached to the door and it be able to have room to operate. Pics could be helpful - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html
