Sand-like material coming from walls around water heater

So Around my water tank and water heater in the laundry room, a sand like material that's grey in colour started appearing around the base of the water tank. It seems like it's coming from out of the wall since the bottom part of the wall is open. I'm not sure what I should do about this or how to explain what is happening here. Any suggestions or thoughts?

floor joists question

I was in my basement taking a looking up at the ceiling/floor-joists that our under my living room. A few of the joists directly over the I-beam look a little bent or cracked. I haven't noticed any issue upstairs (saggy floors, etc.). Is this an issue? Should they be reinforced or bent back in some way? Should I bolt another piece of wood up against it or try to clamp this to the other joint somehow? thanks in advance,

I picked up old fir that was used outside. Im thinking of installing it onto the strapping to make a new bathroom ceiling after removing damaged acoustical tile. I assume I should add plastic sheeting as a moisture barrier first. Add some poly to resist moisture. What type of nail or screw should I use? Anything else?
