Need 1/2" fire rated (type C) drywall- hard to find!?

We need fire rated drywall for a garage wall and code requires it be fire rated- so normallly we would use 5/8" type X. But in this case there is a stair coming down along the wall on the inside that only leaves EXACTLY 1/2" clearance. So I though no problem I can use type C or "improved type X" which comes in 1/2" and is supposed to have the same fire rating as 5/8" type X. However it seems uncommon enough that none of the local big box stores have it. I'm calling around to independent supply places in our area (city of San Francisco) and one guy was trying to tell me all drywall is fire rated- but I thought to get a 1hr fire rating you needed special type X with a higher concentration of whatever material makes it fire resistant.. anyway how do I find this magic "type C " 1/2 stuff?

They have it but they are not in your neighborhood. Maybe they have someone near you or can ship it.

Contact a drywall supply store, not a box store.

There are a number of suppliers in your area.
Put your zip in the distributor locator to find them.

I agree! big box stores only sell what most people use. Look in the yellow pages for a drywall supply store - they will have most anything pertaining to drywall.
