Tile above shower walls
I'm tiling the 8" wide area above the shower wall with 2x2 tile (in sheets). The question is should the tile be: 1. on the level without regard to the ceiling or top of shower-- if so should cut pieces go on the top or bottom?; 2: level / even with the top of shower. C: even with ceiling.
The contractor who put up the shower walls said the area behind the shower head wasn't considered a wet area and didn't need hardiboard etc. normal dry wall was good enough. Is that true.

It's a judgement call. You have to consider which will look best. The further you can keep the grout lines away from the surround and ceiling the harder it will be to see something out of square. Often this means centering the tile on the wall and cutting at the top and bottom but in your case you might be able to get away with cutting only one side.

cement board above the shower water line is not necessary however if you new this was to be tiled, it would have been smart to add cement board at that time. Are you adding to the tile the contractor installed or are you second guessing and adding after the fact?

Shower walls are cultured marble like material installed by the contractor. I'm installing a tile border above the walls. You're correct I should've had cement board put up prior to wall installation. looked at it more and decided to center the tiles in the space - the difference isn't that great.

You will want to keep the tile at the ceiling uncut and level. you will be able to see that line easier than on top of the marble,
