How would I wall up our basement stairwell?

Hello all. Our current stairwell to our basement is nothing special and is only half done or so. I am looking to change that.

Currently, the poured walls are exposed but above those (being the kitchen and garage walls) are walled off, insulated and paneled. (albeit old) I am looking to take down the paneling, probably install some new insulation and wall it all off so that it's nice and clean, and flush.

One problem though. The stairwell is already some what narrow, or rather average sized without me framing in walls. What can I do about this? Would I throw up foam board insulation and then some thin paneling over that? I don't mind the paneled look as long as it's a more updated look.

Pictures attached for some reference of what I am describing. Thanks!

Edit: Fixing the stairs and replacing the ceiling will be another project.

I'd be inclined to clean up/patch the concrete wall and paint it, then drywall or panel the rest.

I'm thinking the same thing. If you want to try something different and out of the ordinary you might try tiling the wall.

Thanks guys. We are in the process of finishing out the basement. Think it would look odd if I left the cement walls but had a finished basement? I am sure people do it all the time but I haven't seen it to be able to judge it lol.

There is extra thick wallcovering, I discovered it when I was in the Navy.
It's called Plaster on a Roll and covers up imperfections on any wall and is paintable. It goes on like wallpaper.

Here's a link to one brand: Untitled Document

I've painted numerous basements that had one or more foundation walls exposed/painted.

Could I just use some thin set mortar to patch the little imperfections? We have quite a bit left over from installing some back splash in our kitchen a couple of weeks ago.

If you don't want to spend time or money, then I would grind off high spots and fill-in voids with cement patch. Then paint.

Thinset will work fine for filling.
