I apologize in advance if I've posted in the wrong forum. I am in the process of removing my kitchen soffits (and then hopefully the popcorn ceilings). I am almost finished, but I'm having trouble taking down the 2x4s that are attached to the ceiling joists. They are fastened with nails, but they're not toenailed like the other boards. I don't see a nail head or hole in the 2x4, but yet they're driven straight through into the joists. I tried sticking my pry bar in there to loosen them, but I actually started to chip the ceiling joist. I don't want to damage the joists. Is there an ideal way to remove the nails? How did they drive the nails through the 2x4 with no hole or nail head visible? I appreciate any input. Sorry if these are dumb questions, but this is all new to me.

 

Ahhhhh...... I recognize that location from your other thread on relocating the wiring. I believe that corner is boxed out for a chimney... correct ?

 

Yes, you are right! The area behind the OSB is boxed out for the chimney. That's actually a good point...Can I remove the OSB or does it have to stay? I was under the impression that I would sheetrock to the top of the ceiling. Maybe it's not necessary, but it doesn't seem flush to the sheetrock. I'm planning to install 42" cabinets that go to the ceiling

My original question was referring to the 2x4s that are still there from the soffits. I'm having trouble getting them off, and I don't want to damage the joists

 

I would imagine the OSB keeps the chimney enclosed. Possibly a firestop.
I'd imagine you could replace that OSB with sheetrock.

 

Easiest way to remove the 2x4's is with a reciprocating saw and a demolition blade that cuts both wood and nails. You start at the end of the 2x4 where it meats the other structural component and saw into the seam between the two. It will cut wood until it hits a nail and then it will dispense with that. Great fun!
