Wall for Basement Stairs

Hi everyone. I'm new to this home ownership thing, but am excited to try new things. I'm wanting to close up my basement stairs so kids can't fall off the sides. I'm not looking for anything permanent since I want to finish the basement in the future. I bought some sheets of plywood and was going to cut them to shape, but it looks like I'm going to have to build some studs or something to mount it to. What can I do and what do I need to do? Pictures included. Thanks a bunch and excuse the mess.

If you just want a temporary guard plywood can be screwed to the side of your stair runners and to the floor joists above. If you want more you can build a traditional framed wall.

The open risers could also pose a danger for kids.
