Scrape and cover or R & R?

Buying a house with tile adhesive on the drywall in the kitchen. I guess they removed the tile but quite a bit of old adhesive is visible.
I can't look at this closer until I close on it next month. I imagine the adhesive is hard as a rock, but I was wondering if I can put fresh adhesive and tile over this or would you replace the sheetrock?

Hard to say without a picture,
I do not have the time to deal with all the scrapping, skiim coating, special primers.
I just remove it all and install new drywall or better yet Tile board.

It's all depending on the quantity and condition of the area.

Could it be scraped down and new tile installed, yes as long as remaining adhesive is minimal such that a new coat of mortar would fill in/over.
