Fixing Ceiling Crack

I tried to fix this, and it looked great for about two months; now it is worse than ever. I sanded it down, put on some drywall compound or whatever on, sanded it and painted it. Immediately after I did it, it looked good.

Now, well....you can see.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this permanently?

I do have access to the attic/joists above this, if that helps at all. The crack goes diagonally compared to the direction of the joists (if that matters).

EDIT: If anyone can help me post an image that would be appreciated too

Is that a plaster ceiling? When using joint compound over a crack like that you need to use drywall tape also - finish it like you would a butt joint.

Nah - it's just drywall.

I didn't add tape, and maybe that's what the problem was, but I will say that when I was sanding my attempt, I do believe I hit a mesh tape (possibly from the last person who tried to patch it?)

At this point, it's sort of bubbling up - I'm guessing I need to cut it before I start again? I was thinking, would it help to add some drywall screws too?

You want to remove all the loose and if the drywall isn't well secured to the ceiling joists - add screws. Mesh tape doesn't have a great track record, if you use mesh it should have a setting compound applied over it to lock it down.

Thank you again for your help. I noticed that if I push up on the drywall, it feels like it's not very secure. I'll pick up some paper tape tonight.
