Seam Between Studs

I removed a bathroom in a bonus room upstairs. The walls of the bathroom met the existing walls between the 24" on center roof trusses. No structure was added to back up the joint.
Can I back the drywall joint with a 1 X 3 , screws and fiber tape or is it better to remove another 16 inches of drywall to hit a truss ?
Thanks

You can screw whatever boards you want into the corner though I don't like using 1"x lumber as it sometimes splits easily so I normally use 2x4. You just want something to be able to screw the corner edge of the sheetrock to.

A 2x6 turned sideways on the wall works well for backing on a partition wall. Or you can add a 2x4 "ladder" by placing 5 - 7 2x4s horizontally between the wall studs that are 16" on center.
