ceiling repair help

repairing a ceiling from hurricane Florence . Should I square up the opening? I cut out where it was wet and on the one end you can see I went past the rafter by about 4 inches, should I just cut to the next rafter to make it easy to screw on or use a thing piece of wood between the seems or?

A square/rectangle patch is easier to do. I'd probably cut it back to the next joist and add a nailer along side that joist.

White Powder on interior walls

Hello! I'm thinking of buying a 90s house which has some powder-like white stuff on the walls. There are several wall that has that kind of finish, mainly at second floor and basement. It's not like dust, when I try to remove it with my hand, it does not "roll" and it stays on the wall. I've heard of frosting related to calcium stuff coming out of the paint. Hi All, Basically, we were doing construction work underneath the floorboards and i fell through the roof (I am fine) and broke the ceiling in the room below. I am looking for tiles to replace the broken ceiling but need help as they are very old if you find them let me know. Picture is attached below.
