Finishing garage ceiling with drywall
Hello all - I have 60's era ranch style home and the rafters in the garage are spaced 48" apart. I'm looking into finishing the garage with drywall and am wondering if I would be better off adding additional joists between the rafters or use strapping?

It would help to know the size of the garage, and the distance additional joists need to span. I think without a doubt you should add more joists. Question will be the size and if they will be overspanned.

Oh wow.
Lasted that long with that amount of span....
I'm guessing snow load isn't an issue.
2x4 trusts?

I'm in Central Minnesota so it's seen plenty of snow, over 3 feet last winter before I was able to clean it off.
It's hard to explain what I have so here's a picture I found online, the only difference is I don't have boards for sheathing, I have plywood.

Yeah, you will want to locate 20' lumber at a local lumber yard. Same dimension as the existing. Frame it in with a king post and struts as they have done on the existing. Your spacing will be 24" OC.
After that, it's up to you if you want to install flat strapping perpendicular to those joists. That sure would make it easier to hang your ceiling. But you need the structure there first.
