I’m currently renovating a 1920’s duplex that will serve as rental property. For drywall, I will not be doing the work myself and instead using a contractor. Drywall will replace dilapidated plaster, which has already been completely removed, mostly in the ceilings. The specifications will be 5/8 inch drywall with 1 5/8 inch screws. The contractor has said I can use shorter screws 1 3/4 inch but will go with the longer screws. These specs meet local code. Although the code does not require it, I am wondering if it’s a good idea to use "fire-code" drywall (called Type X) instead of regular drywall. I’m more focused on weight on the stud system of the old building rather than cost as a consideration. Looking forward to your feedback. If you have any other thoughts i.e. on thickness and length of screws, I would also appreciate them.

Good afternoon, We are planning a remodel in our kitchen which involves some drywall removal. The house was built in 1978, and I have been reading that up until that point (+ or - a few years) there could be asbestos in the drywall. Can anyone speak to their experiences working with drywall from that time period and if anyone has had it tested for Asbestos and what the result was? Should this be a concern of mine? Thanks
