Butt boards
The drywall guys hung drywall, taped and 3 coat mudded my entire house in 4 days. All that's left is final sanding.
They used a technique that I had never heard of when dealing with butt joints. They nailed butt boards (under width 2X4s) between studs and landed the drywall joint on the butt boards instead of on a stud. When they screwed the drywall to the butt boards it pulled the drywall in slightly making a tapered edge.
Anyone else done drywall this way?

While I've never hung drywall that way [other than repairs] there are some that routinely do so. They claim it makes for nicer seams. I don't know if that method is any better but I doubt there is anything wrong with.

It sounds like you've got some good sub contractors working on your house. That's the only way I've heard of getting butt joints smooth. The edges of the sheets come with a taper so there's room for the tape & mud and still come out flush but butt joints don't have the taper.

That's a good way to do butt joints, takes a little more time but works well. Just did this on one long wall on a bathroom remodel I'm on since the butt joint would be right behind the vanity and around the plumbing penetrations.
It's not a new technique, just not used by many.

When I visited the house before they taped it I thought the job was kind of sloppy. After taping and mudding I was really impressed by the job they did.
