replace 1/2" ceiling drywall with 5/8"

I removed the 1/2" drywall ceiling in the garage. I was going to replace with a fire code X rated 5/8" dry wall.
However, The existing gap between the wall drywall and the cieling ceiling is only that same 1/2". How would I do this?

Butt the 5/8 ceiling drywall against the wall drywall or cut all wall drywall at the top so the 5/8 ceiling drywall slides over the wall drywall.

Ideally you'd cut the gap wider but butting it up is a lot easier and what I would do. If there isn't enough ceiling joist to secure the ceiling drywall to - add nailers on those 2 ends of the garage.

You could also add a 1x? around the top of he wall, sort of a cove molding look, to support and finish the edge, once painted you wont even see it!
