Furring strips over popcorn ceiling *parallel* to ceiling joists?

I know that furring strips (ripped from 1/2" plywood in my case) installed over popcorn ceilings have been discussed in the past -- but only with the strips installed perpendicular to the ceiling joists. I'm interested in installing them parallel for this project so that the finished T&G boards can run parallel to the flooring (which is parallel to the long sides of the room). For context, the purpose of the furring strips in the first place is so that I'll have an opportunity to shim and level.

On the face of it I don't see any obvious issues, but curious about thoughts from the community.

Cheers, and thanks in advance!

I'm not sure 1/2" plywood is stout enough unless the entire length is fastened to the ceiling joist.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was planning on fastening the furring strips with screws every 16" or so. Is this what you were getting at when recommending to fasten the entire length?

Yes, but how often/high do you expect to shim the plywood strips?
