I have 1/2 in plaster board.

Between the apt downstairs and my kitchen above the apt, the plasterboard is 1/2 in. getting a little too mature (old fart)to install 1/2 in. Could I install two 1/4 in instead? Not sure if when they built the house it was maybe fire code or; not. In NYC.

If you are talking about the ceiling the answer would be no. 1/4" [even doubled up] isn't rigid enough to be hung on a ceiling.

You could also check rental shops and home stores for a drywall lift.
