Question Help needed: Crack and Unevenness on Ceiling - what should I do?

Hello everyone, I'm so happy I found this forum. Can you help me to understand what has caused this ceiling crack and straight unevenness? I'm actually buying this home, as per superficial inspections by the inspector, it's not a big issue, but my gut is saying to ask for more opinions.

That sort of thing typically shows up from a leak of some type. Toilet or tub overflowing, or a roof leak. Rarely, but I've seen it from massive frost melt in an attic in spring. Not seeing any water stains could indicate they simply primed and painted it in order to flip it. Or it "could" just be from someone's horrible taping ability.

And by my point of view, that crown moulding is upside down. That would bug the heck out of me. But it screams bad diy. At least it looks like they did a good job caulking it.

And welcome to the forum.

XSleeper Thank you very much!
There are actually two bathrooms on this ceiling. But we didn't find any leakage from the top also, yes no stains at all - so I don't think it's water damage either. I was worried if this related to structure but thanks for clarifying. Phew!

I agree, it looks like a poor taping job - nothing structural. Fairly easy to fix although it is a messy and somewhat time consuming jib.

I have seen similar with poor sheetrock work. If there isn't enough or any mud applied underneath the tape there isn't anything to hold it in place so eventually it comes loose. Unfortunately the texture will significantly up the difficulty level of a repair. Fixing the sheetrock is easy. Matching the texture well will be difficult and require skill & experience. This would be a good time to consider if you want to redo the whole ceiling, maybe with a smooth finish.

I always thought that popcorn was the easiest texture to blend on a ceiling repair ..... but I did do a lot of it back in the 70s and 80s. The main thing is to use the right size popcorn and feather it out into the old.
