is there any way to fix this outlet without cutting the old drywall out and making a new hole. the box is not attached to a stud, it just clamps to the drywall

There is some adjustment in the box where the device mounts but not that much .... assuming your pic is level.
Altering/patching the drywall isn't a real big deal.

Remove the cover plate. Then you'll see the two screws that hold the box in place. Hopefully all you have to do is realign it and tighten the mounting screws.

Yes you have to take the cover plate off to see what you are dealing with

The drywall is messed up around it. If they made boxes that has the tabs on the opposite sides I might be able to do something. I was kind of wondering if they made boxes with arms that would extend to between the studs like they do for ceiling fans

If that is the case you might need to replace that section of sheetrock.

I agree with PD. If the outlet is that much out of line and it's annoying, then re-do the section wall board and re-install the outlet.

When you cut out the wall section make the hole large enough that you can do whatever work you need to do. Like maybe there is a stud near enough you can use it. Or maybe screw a 2 X 4 in your opening for both attaching the new drywall and the box. Cut this longer than the height of your hole and screw it to the drywall above and below the opening Plumb the wood so the box is close to plumb
Be careful. Don't cut a wire.
