building room in basement- Don't like the idea of drop ceiling or sheet rock for ceiling. Saw some pics of people using wainscoting or beadboard with pine for trim. I love the look- but it looks like most of these were installed over an existing sheet rock ceiling. I am concerned it will not look as good over the floor joists there now. Not sure if it will lay as flat or look wavy. Anyone have any experience or thought on this?
For our basement we used a product from Armstrong called Country Plank, it's made of similar material as drop ceiling panels but in a tongue and groove application.
Actually it's not recommended to be installed directly to joists but I modified that by adding furring strips and gluing and stapling them in place which work great!
It will only look wavy if the framing is wavy. All you would have to do is check it with a long level (78") and see if there are any humps or dips as you check the ceiling from place to place.
If it is wavy you would likely want to add perpendicular furring, (such as 1x3 or 1x4 flat) which you would shim as needed to make the ceiling flat.
Small crack keeps reappearing here. Is the only solution drywall compound and/or drywall tape?

Removing an interior load bearing wall with 2ft span. Was going to use (3) 2x12x20 Versa Lam beams, however, they are not available for 4 months if ordered today. Looking at steel beam as alternative. What W series or S series beam would be comparable? S series would work better because the flange width requires less attached wood for ceiling joists. Was looking at W8-21.
