NEED IDEAS ON HOW TO COVERUP OLD SPRAYED ON ACOUSTIC CEILING-SOMETIMES CALLED POPCORN CEILING. IT CONTAINS ASBESTOS MATERIALS AND WOULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REMOVE SO WOULD LIKE TO COVER. I LIKE THE IDEA OF PUTTING SOME SORT OF WOOD LOOK PANALS (ARMSTRONG MAKES SOME). ANYONE EVER JUST APPLY NEW DRYWALL OVER AND MAKE A NEW CEILING? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFUL.

I've done drywall. you just got to make sure you know where your ceiling joists are. Break some holes or use a nail to find your nailing. Mark on the walls and snap lines (unless you got a good eye). You can use 1/2" drywall, any thinner may show contour, if there is any. Use 2" drywall screws, to be sure. If you wanna cheat a little, you may not have to tape the new ceiling/wall joint,(caulk it!)
good luck
