Question fastening wood strips to drywall

We would like to change our bathroom walls by adding some 4" wide wood strips (1/2" to 3/4" thick) on the bottom half (wainscotting effect) of the walls before repainting. The strips will be spaced about 8" OC so we will not be fastening into studs all the way around. Should I fasten the strips with some type of special hardware or glue, or should I just use finishing nails into the drywall and hope for the best.

Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks.
