Drywall
After patching medium size holes, what's the best method to try and get the texture of the surrounding area. Several attempts look bad, and the smooth pactch really stands out

Try a few different methods on a spare piece of drywall or plywood before heading to the patch so you don't build up to much compound with attempts that don't match. Post back with a description of the finish......Dont go for perfection in one try. Apply the mud and you can always knock it around a bit and/or a fix up a small area after the intial set and keep in mind that patches show up alot more until paint is added at which time they blend a bit better.

patch texture
After patching walls & sanding. appling semi-gloss paint, when dry the patches stand out very smooth when looking down the wall, tried various methods to achieve the texture of the area around the patch i.e. sponge on paint, long nap roller, nothing looks real good.

It would help if you could describe the finish more however one popular techique for blending.
Apply compound.
Push a trowel into the compound and pull back on it.
Bring the trowel across the area to knock down the high spots and/or glide it across depending upon the finish. Their are also compounds with additives for different appearances available at Sherwin Williams.

I finally found a product to match the texturing. It's called Knockdown Texture, it comes in a can and was real easy to use. The texture starts out with some sharp edge lines but an extra couple of coats of paint they the edges smooth out pretty nice. The only problem now is I have go through the house texturing all the smooth spots and repaint.
Hope this helps.
