texturing drywalled ceiling

I am ready to texture a newly drywalled ceiling. To make the joint compound smooth and buttery, what do i add to the already mixed compound? I've been told paint thinner.

Just water. When I had to do this, I found that if you get a rough texture paint roller, you can just "paint" on the thinned out drywall compound just like paint and it has a real nice texture to it. The other way is to put a coat of compund on the ceiling and just use a crumpled up plastic bag and just dab at the ceiling.
