Lots About Concrete Walls
Have just torn out Mr. Jerryrig's basement bathroom walls; regular drywall around a shower, then covered with a shower surround. We are taking out the shower, installing greenboard and using a faux stone technique to emulate a cavern...really neat ideas, but no definite methods. First, the concrete walls were moldy and there was some mold on the drywall which was put onto studs that were about 8" from the concrete wall and a high window. The window has the dryer vent and a heating vent going through it. (I know) I would like to insulate this area and put up some type of moisture barrier (plastic??) to keep the mold off the insulation before we continue with the green board.... Also any thoughts on what to use (remember this is a bathroom) to simulate the slate (trowelled on) and a stain to make it look realistic -probably 2-3 colors, and a sealer. I thought about mastic as is used in tiles, and perhaps a polyurethane to seal. I sure would appreciate any construction and/or artistic thoughts on this. TIA - Jamie

first off kill the mold that is there by washing
it with a solution of bleach and water. duroc or
concrete board would be a better choice in a
bathroom than greenboard. water will eventually
get through the grout lines or any other small
hole and duroc is much more resistent to water
damage than either sheetrock or greenboard. if you
do use greenboard be sure it is finished off and sealed with an
oil base primer and paint before you tile it. and
yes, you want to put up a plastic vapor barrier.
