Drywall ends - tapered to flat butt jt./ 1/2 inch gap

While installing drywall, I have a wall condition where I have a 4' vertical joint and didn't realize that one end of the sheet side is tapered and the other is flat. Is this ok (and I just need to be careful taping) or will it cause problems later etc. I also have another question I have another wall area just below a small 2 inch soffit where I have a 1/2" x 8 inch space with wood behind (solid) shoud I caulk, fill with jt. compound and tape or try to squeeze in a small piece of sheetrock to this space ?

if your butt joint is properly attatched to a stud then no problem. Just prefill the gap with mud, let set up and tape over. Same with your gap under the soffit. fill with mud then put tape over the gap.
