1st coat of spackle dried before taping

I had my wife do some of the first coat of spackle on new sheetrock walls. She thought she was helping and decided that she could do all the seams and joints for me before I got home from work. The problem is that she was not aware about tape and has spackled all seams corners etc. with compound (built up on thesome walls) which is now DRY WITH NO TAPE. My question is should I sand it all down and then apply a new first coat with tape or is there someting else I should do. How much of a problem will I have with the extra layer of compound

Your wife may have helped a little after all. She did all the prefilling for you. If it is really thick you will have to sand down some. If not, go ahead and tape over whats there. Make sure you don't over finish the joint. That means don't put too much over the tape or that will show just as much as too little.
