Luan Plywood beams

I am making false beams for a ceiling. Is there any reason I can't build them out of 1/4" Luan plywood, then skim coat the wood with mud when I mud & tape? Just want to make sure the mud isnt going to react with the wood or something and fall off eventually. Thanks

It would be a lot cheaper if you just make a frame then put drywall over it. But if you go the other route you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you seal the mud with a good stain blocker. Sometimes the wood bleeds through. I know it sounds weird but it happens.
